The Color of Scent: How Synesthesia Shapes Wicked Good Fragrances
Imagine experiencing the world in a way where senses blend together, creating a colorful symphony in your mind. For me, this isn’t just imagination—it’s how I experience the world, and it’s the heartbeat of Wicked Good. This magical phenomenon is called synesthesia, and it’s the secret sauce behind our most unique fragrances.
What Is Synesthesia?
Synesthesia is a neurological condition where the stimulation of one sense triggers an involuntary experience in another. For some, this means hearing colors or tasting shapes. For me, it’s smelling in colors. Each fragrance note I encounter transforms into vibrant hues that help me design scents with layers of emotion and depth.
The Science Behind the Magic
While synesthesia feels like pure wizardry, it has a scientific explanation. The brains of synesthetes have unusual neural connections, causing sensory pathways to cross. It’s rare—affecting about 4% of the population—but for those who have it, it’s a creative superpower.
For me, fragrance notes like bergamot might glow like warm amber sunlight, while vanilla exudes soft, creamy whites. Musk often takes on a smoky, charcoal gray, and mint sparkles like frosted emeralds. These colors inspire me to craft scents that aren’t just smelled—they’re felt.
How Synesthesia Influences Wicked Good
At Wicked Good, every bottle of fragrance starts with a vision—a palette of colors inspired by the notes I "see." Here’s how it works:
- Layering with Intention: I select notes that harmonize visually, as well as aromatically. Think of it like painting a masterpiece, where each stroke is chosen for its emotional impact.
- Unexpected Pairings: Synesthesia allows me to combine notes in ways others might not consider. If lavender’s dusky purple feels too heavy, I balance it with the golden brightness of lemon.
- Themed Creations: From spooky apothecary vibes to uplifting manifesting blends, every collection tells a story through its unique “color-scape.”
Famous Synesthetes
I’m in good company! Many creative minds have synesthesia:
- Pharrell Williams sees music in colors, which influences his songwriting.
- Kandinsky, the artist, painted based on the sounds he heard.
- Billy Joel experiences music as shapes and colors.
It’s no wonder so many synesthetes gravitate toward artistic fields!
A Fragrance Example: Autumn Pear
One of my favorite creations is our fragrance Autumn Pear. Its notes—ripe green anjou pear, cinnamon, vanilla, and amber—paint a vivid picture in my mind:
- Pear shine in soft, glowing greens.
- Cinnamon ignites like fiery streaks of red-orange.
- Vanilla mellows the palette with creamy white.
- Amber finishes with a golden, sunset-like hue.
When these colors come together, they tell a story of autumn warmth, comfort, and quiet creamy sophistication—exactly what the fragrance smells like!
How Synesthesia Makes Wicked Good... Wicked Good
Fragrance creation is deeply personal, but for me, it’s also a visual journey. Synesthesia allows me to see beyond the ingredients, blending scents that evoke emotions, memories, and even dreams. Whether it’s a cozy, Hygge-inspired blend or a dark, mysterious apothecary scent, every bottle of Wicked Good is crafted with the colors I see and the feelings they create.
